Kinesiology Taping

Kinesiology Taping

What is it?

Kinesiology taping (K-Tape) is a technique that involves applying a stretchy, elastic tape to the body to provide support, stability, and promote natural movement. It is different from athletic taping, which uses rigid tape for immobilisation and joint protection. K-Tape is designed to mimic the elasticity of the skin, allowing for a full range of motion while providing gentle support to muscles and joints.

How can it help?

It can help improve circulation, reduce pain, and enhance proprioception. Unlike athletic tape, K-Tape is typically left on for longer durations and can be worn during physical activity and even while showering.

A Real life example of how it works?

Here is an example of a rationale for using the tape: When an individual suffers an injury, inflammation stimulates pain receptors in the soft tissue and joints. This can lead to muscle spasms as a protective mechanism against further trauma. K-Tape is frequently applied in situations where the soft tissue is held in a lengthened position, exposing the receptors that hinder movement. By applying the tape, an alternative motor input is created, resulting in a modified motor output or movement pattern. This process helps alleviate pain, improve movement, and accelerate the recovery process.

What can K-Tape be used for?

Some of the additional benefits of K-Taping include:

Pain relief

K tape can help reduce pain by providing gentle support and relieving pressure on injured tissues. It may also help decrease pain sensitivity and improve pain tolerance.

Support and stability

K tape provides support to muscles, ligaments, and joints without restricting range of motion. It can help improve joint stability, reduce excessive movements, and prevent further injury during the rehabilitation process.

Improved circulation and lymphatic drainage

The application of K tape can enhance blood circulation and lymphatic flow, promoting the removal of waste products and reducing swelling or edema around the injured area.

Enhanced proprioception

K tape stimulates skin receptors, which can improve proprioception (the body's sense of position and movement). This heightened awareness helps individuals maintain proper alignment and perform movements more efficiently, reducing the risk of re-injury.
